Skunk #1 Strain
- 10.2% THC
- 0.33% CBD
- 0.01% CBN
Skunk #1 is a classic strain that's been smoked since 1978 – and for good reason. Developed in Holland, this indica-dominant strain is known for providing a near-perfect balance of head and body high and for its signature skunky aroma. While this Skunk #1 doesn't top the THC content charts, it does pack a punch in terms of effect.
Overview of Skunk #1
Skunk #1 is 65% indica and 35% sativa. The plant has large leaves and produces smallish, rounded buds that gather together in clusters smothered with trichomes. Skunk #1 buds are usually a muted green that can fade into light yellow and are punctuated with bold orange pistils.
The buds are nice and sticky, bursting with aroma as soon as you pull them apart. Intense skunky scent meets your nose first, underpinned with earthy tones and a sour note that intertwines with a light sweetness.
This strain is not a knockout in terms of THC. Its THC content only averages 15-19%, and its CBD content is somewhat negligible, topping out at around 1% in most batches. The terpenes that give Skunk #1 its signature earthy, citrusy smell are myrcene, linalool, humulene, and caryophyllene. The aroma of Skunk #1 can be nearly overpowering, and the smell lingers for quite a while after being smoked, or even just being opened!
Potential Positive Effects of Skunk #1
Skunk #1 has a unique combination of effects that are nearly legendary. Despite being mostly indica, this strain delivers a head high and body high that are equally matched in intensity. Upon smoking Skunk #1, the first thing you'll notice is a rush of cerebral energy that will leave you giddy and fighting the giggles. A burst of creative energy is quickly followed by deep body relaxation with a dissociation hint.
Potential Negative Effects of Skunk #1
If too much is consumed, Skunk #1 can also inspire paranoia or racing thoughts. Dry mouth and dry, red eyes are something to watch out for as well.
Lineage of Skunk #1
Skunk #1's Dutch breeders combined Columbian Gold, Acapulco Gold, and Afghani in order to produce the powerful strain. It was the first hybrid to be stabilized and is so renowned that 'skunk' is now a catch-all term for any potent weed. Skunk #1 is a crucial genetic component of many popular strains today, such as Green Crack and Jack Herer.
Growing Skunk #1
Since the Netherlands are so cold, Skunk #1 was originally bred to be grown indoors. But with decades of breeding since, it's now suitable to grow outdoors in most climates. Skunk #1 grows taller than most indica hybrids, so be sure you have adequate space if growing indoors.
The strain is hardy, but the density of the buds means you should keep up the mold patrol and ensure plants stay dry near the end of the flowering stage. When grown indoors, flowering time is from 8-9 weeks. You can expect about 18 ounces of bud for every square meter you planted.
Where to Find Skunk #1
Skunk #1 remains incredibly popular in its hometown of Amsterdam. Although it's the foundation for many of our favorite strains, it's a bit more difficult to find in the United States. Your best bet is the West Coast, particularly Washington, Oregon, Nevada, and California.
